Bathroom Remodel & Improvement

Bathroom remodels are like kitchens often requiring more than one trade or specialist to complete the job. Below are the various bathroom renovation services you might need.

  • Bathroom design
  • Bathroom plumbing – piping, basins, faucets, toilets, shower/bath, etc.
  • Bathroom flooring
  • Bathroom cabinetry
  • Bathroom lighting
  • Room expansion/addition

Flooring

Many homeowners attempt to install flooring of all types themselves.  It can turn out nicely if you know what you’re doing but you can also ruin expensive new flooring if you don’t.  Below are the various flooring services you can hire.  Many flooring service companies offer every service (one-stop-shop).

Plumbing

Plumbing is probably something you want to hire a plumber for unless it’s something such as installing a toilet or faucet.  I have a buddy who owns a plumbing company and while plumbers charge quite a bit, your plumbing is not something you want to ruin.  It’ll cost you in the long run if you mess up your plumbing.  Below is a list of common plumbing services.

  • Backflow preventer install
  • Bathtub/shower install/replace
  • Boiler installation/repair/service
  • Clogged drain repair
  • Faucets/Fixtures/Pipes repair/replace
  • Septic system install/repair

Electrical

I also have a buddy who is an electrician and his fees for services are getting up there as well (like plumbers).  Even more important to get it done right than plumbing is electrical work. Shoddy electrical work can result in deadly fires.  I do not touch anything electrical for that reason.  Below are the more common electrician services (most electricians offer every service listed).

  • Fan installation/repair
  • Ceiling fan install/repair
  • Electrical work for home addition/remodel
  • Electrical inspections
  • Electrical panel upgrade
  • Electrical wiring/rewiring
  • Exhaust fan install
  • Hot tubs/jacuzzi/spa install
  • Interior lighting
  • Smoke dectector
  • Switches/Outlets/Fixtures install and repair
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Questions: Ask an electrician questions here.

HVAC

I also, if you can believe it, have a buddy who owns an HVAC company.  Like plumbing and electrical work, HVAC isn’t easy, it’s important and if it’s done wrong can cost you a lot more in the long run.  Below are common services that most HVAC companies offer.

  • Central A/C install/replace/service/repair
  • Dryer duct cleaning
  • Ductless A/C install/service/repair
  • Ducts/vents install/replace/cleaning
  • Electric furnace install/repair
  • Gas furnace install/repair
  • Gas piping
  • Heat pump install/repair
  • Oil furnace install/repair
  • Propane furnace install/repair
  • Thermostat install/replace
  • Questions: Ask an HVAC pro questions here.

Doors

Door services vary from installing new doors, hinge repair, door lock repair or replacement and even painting.  Many homeowners do their own door work which makes sense since it’s not terribly hard. Exterior doors may be a bit more complicated because of the weather proofing requirement but door repair is simple. If you prefer to hire a door repair service, below are the usual services they offer.

  • Broken hinges repair
  • Exterior door installation/repair
  • Interior door installation/repar
  • Garage door install/repair/service
  • Weather stripping/insulation
  • Door locks

Windows

Window repair and installation can be tricky depending on the type of window, materials surrounding the window and how many you need to install.  If it’s one window, some homeowners can DIY it but generally most hire a window service to fix/replace windows. Below are a myriad of window services you might need.

  • Skylight install/repair/seal
  • Window frame install/repair
  • Windows installation/replace
  • Windows repair

Garage

I have a friend who recently added on a bay to an existing garage.  He did some of the work himself and contracted out the rest (he contracted most of it).  While seemingly a simple job it’s more involved than you might think especially the concrete aspect of it.  Garage work can be simple (new garage door opener, garage organization installation) or more complex such as a full build.

  • Garage build
  • Garage door install/repair/service
  • Garage remodel
  • Garage door remote opener install/repair
  • Panel replacement or repair
  • Garage organizers
  • Remodel to accommodate a disability
  • Weather stripping/insulation

Home Security

Home security is interesting because with technology (our phones and apps) you can install some pretty good home security for not a lot of money and do it yourself.  However, this is typically self-monitoring so the best you can do is call the police.  It is not a home security service that sends folks out to your house in the case of an incident.  I’m not really sure what a home security person could do in the event of a home invasion other than call the police so you might be best with a DIY option.  Those home security outfits charge a lot of money.

  • Alarm/security system monitoring service
  • Alarm/security system installation
  • Alarm/security system repair
  • Home automation services
  • Surveillance cameras installation/repair

Painting & Wallpaper

Painting and wallpapering is one of those things that look easy but isn’t.  It’s also a ton of work especially if painting all of your house.  There are a ton of painting companies out there who can do it so much faster and it could be more cost-effective in the long run.

  • Wallpaper hanging/removal
  • Exterior painting
  • Exterior trim/shutters
  • Interior painting – 1, 2, 3+ rooms
  • Metal objector services – paint electrostatically
  • Paint/stain decks/fences/porches
  • Faux finishes

Drywall & Insulation

Drywall and insulation is also a project many homeowners attempt on their own. It’s tough work and IMO, totally understandable if you’d prefer to hire a drywall or insulation expert to handle it for you. Below are some typical drywall and insulation services you can hire professionals to handle.

  • Drywall installation
  • Drywall repair
  • Drywall patching
  • Batt or rolled insulation
  • Blown-in insulation
  • Other insulation install service
  • Try our drywall cost calculator.

Tile Work

Tile work is precision work so unless you know what you’re doing, hiring a tile professional is the way to go.  If it’s not done right it can look horrible.  Tile work is done for flooring but also walls in kitchens and bathrooms as well as showers in bathrooms.

  • Backsplash installation
  • Bathroom/shower install
  • Grout repair/replacement
  • Natural stone (granite, marble, slate, etc.)
  • Tile and grout cleaning
  • Tile floor installation/repair
  • Walls/backsplashes

Siding

Siding is a big job.  I have a buddy who recently resided his house and what he did is hire a professional for half of the house.  He watched and learned and then did the other half himself to cut down cost.  The point is installing or replacing siding is a big job that requires some know-how.

  • Stucco install/repair
  • Siding (all kinds) install
  • Siding (all types) repair

Concrete

Concrete work spans many projects for your home including driveways, patios, exterior steps, basements and more.  If building a new home, there is potentially a ton of concrete work that needs to be done and it’s probably best to hire a contractor who uses a concrete professional (especially for pouring foundations).

  • Basement waterproofing
  • Concrete applications
  • Concrete sawing/removal
  • Concrete driveways/flooring installation
  • Concrete flatwork – repair and resurfacing
  • Concrete foundations – install/repair
  • Concrete patios, walks and steps
  • Concrete resurfacing
  • Concrete retaining walls
  • Garage floor coatings
  • Concrete overlays/stamped concrete
  • Concrete polishing
  • Poured concrete walls

Gutters

Gutter installation and repair is one of those unglamorous jobs that can save you a ton of money in the long run. Damaged or clogged gutters can result in leaks and water damage.  Most homeowners can unclog their own gutters but it’s a nasty job.  Installing new gutters should be done by a pro.  Below are some typical gutter services you might need.

  • Copper gutters install/repair
  • Galvanized gutters install/repair
  • Gutter cleaning
  • Metal awning/patio covers
  • PVC gutters installation/repair
  • Roof maintenance/cleaning
  • Seamless metal gutters install/repair
  • Wood gutters installation/repair

Roofing

Roofing is tough work and requires some know-how.  It’s no surprise that most homeowners that need a new roof hire a roofing service. Below are some typical roofing services you can hire.

  • Ice dam removal
  • Roof inspection
  • Roof cleaning/maintenance
  • Asphalt shingle
  • Flat/Single ply
  • Wood shake
  • Roof snow removal
  • New roof

Below are some typical driveway services and projects you may need done.

  • Asphalt paving and repair
  • Asphalt sealing
  • Concrete applications
  • Concrete sawing/removal
  • Concrete driveways
  • Concrete flatwork – repair and resurfacing
  • Concrete resurfacing
  • Garage floor coatings
  • Gravel install/spreading
  • Minor grading/restopping
  • Concrete overlays/stamping
  • Polished concrete
  • Poured concrete

Outdoor Structures (Gazebos etc.)

Many homeowners build their own outdoor structures or buy a kit and assemble it.  It’s actually a good way to go about things.  If something goes wrong it doesn’t impact any important aspect of your home. However, if you prefer to get a pro, you can hire local builders and landscape designers to do pretty much anything in your yard.

  • Custom carpentry jobs
  • Exterior structure painting
  • New construction/additions
  • Sheds
  • Pergolas
  • Arbor
  • Trellis work
  • Barns
  • Gazebos
  • Wood stairs/railings

Fencing

Building a fence is a beastly job if it’s a large fence.  I believe I could manage it but it would take many weekends and probably wouldn’t turn out as good as what a pro could do.  I’d be on the fence about whether to pay a pro thousands or save that money myself.  Fence services include the following.

  • Landscape design
  • Landscape lighting
  • Wood fence installation
  • Fence painting and/or staining
  • Poured concrete walls
  • Vinyl fences
  • Barbed wire
  • Chain link
  • Wrought Iron
  • All lengths, heights and fencing projects.

Decks & Patios

Most people who can use a hammer and saw can build a simple deck on flat ground.  Beyond that, it may require a pro (I’m talking multiple levels, built-in features, difficult terrain etc.).  Patios are trickier than they appear (if you want a flat patio).  Below are common deck and patio professional services you can hire locally.

  • Concrete patios
  • Concrete walk and steps
  • Deck design and construction
  • Porch design and construction
  • Ramp design and construction
  • Pavers – patios, walks and steps
  • Deck painting and staining
  • Wood stairs/railings install/repair
  • Finish/Trim/Molding
  • Hot Tubs/Jacuzzi/Spa installation
  • Metal awning and patio covers

Landscaping

We have a service that mows our lawn and does a big yard cleanup each year. It’s awesome. It’s one more thing I don’t have to worry about.  Most towns/cities have a lot of landscaping services to choose from so the cost isn’t that much.  The way I see it is I can dedicate one night a week to mowing the lawn or I can coach my kids’ teams. I prefer to coach and hang out with my kids than mow a lawn.

  • Gardening – Bushes/Flowers/etc.
  • Hardscapes
  • Install Synthetic Grass
  • Interlocking Pavers-Driveways, Floors Install
  • Land Clearing
  • Landscape Design/Install

Cleaning Services

Like landscaping services, there are so many cleaning services these days that it’s a no-brainer if you have a few extra bucks.  We hire a cleaning service to come in every 3 weeks to clean the time-consuming parts of the home such as floors and bathrooms.  Getting that done by a crew of 3 in 1.5 hours is great.

  • Maid services (clean pretty much anything)
  • Carpet cleaning
  • Gutter cleaning
  • Junk removal
  • Move in/out
  • Organizing and declutter services
  • Power washing services
