When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, there are specialists within the industry to handle specific aspects of your kitchen renovation. Chances are you will need to hire multiple trades to complete a full kitchen reno.

Bathroom remodels are like kitchens often requiring more than one trade or specialist to complete the job. Below are the various bathroom renovation services you might need.

Many homeowners attempt to install flooring of all types themselves.  It can turn out nicely if you know what you’re doing but you can also ruin expensive new flooring if you don’t.  Below are the various flooring services you can hire.  Many flooring service companies offer every service (one-stop-shop).

Plumbing is probably something you want to hire a plumber for unless it’s something such as installing a toilet or faucet.  I have a buddy who owns a plumbing company and while plumbers charge quite a bit, your plumbing is not something you want to ruin.  It’ll cost you in the long run if you mess up your plumbing.  Below is a list of common plumbing services.

I also have a buddy who is an electrician and his fees for services are getting up there as well (like plumbers).  Even more important to get it done right than plumbing is electrical work. Shoddy electrical work can result in deadly fires.  I do not touch anything electrical for that reason.  Below are the more common electrician services (most electricians offer every service listed).

I also, if you can believe it, have a buddy who owns an HVAC company.  Like plumbing and electrical work, HVAC isn’t easy, it’s important and if it’s done wrong can cost you a lot more in the long run.  Below are common services that most HVAC companies offer.

Door services vary from installing new doors, hinge repair, door lock repair or replacement and even painting.  Many homeowners do their own door work which makes sense since it’s not terribly hard. Exterior doors may be a bit more complicated because of the weather proofing requirement but door repair is simple. If you prefer to hire a door repair service, below are the usual services they offer.

Window repair and installation can be tricky depending on the type of window, materials surrounding the window and how many you need to install.  If it’s one window, some homeowners can DIY it but generally most hire a window service to fix/replace windows. I have a friend who recently added on a bay to an existing garage.  He did some of the work himself and contracted out the rest (he contracted most of it).  While seemingly a simple job it’s more involved than you might think especially the concrete aspect of it.  Garage work can be simple (new garage door opener, garage organization installation) or more complex such as a full build.  

Home security is interesting because with technology (our phones and apps) you can install some pretty good home security for not a lot of money and do it yourself.  However, this is typically self-monitoring so the best you can do is call the police.  It is not a home security service that sends folks out to your house in the case of an incident.  I’m not really sure what a home security person could do in the event of a home invasion other than call the police so you might be best with a DIY option.  Those home security outfits charge a lot of money.

Painting and wallpapering is one of those things that look easy but isn’t.  It’s also a ton of work especially if painting all of your house.  There are a ton of painting companies out there who can do it so much faster and it could be more cost-effective in the long run.  

Drywall and insulation is also a project many homeowners attempt on their own. It’s tough work and IMO, totally understandable if you’d prefer to hire a drywall or insulation expert to handle it for you. Below are some typical drywall and insulation services you can hire professionals to handle.

Tile work is precision work so unless you know what you’re doing, hiring a tile professional is the way to go.  If it’s not done right it can look horrible.  Tile work is done for flooring but also walls in kitchens and bathrooms as well as showers in bathrooms.

Siding is a big job.  I have a buddy who recently resided his house and what he did is hire a professional for half of the house.  He watched and learned and then did the other half himself to cut down cost.  The point is installing or replacing siding is a big job that requires some know-how.

Concrete work spans many projects for your home including driveways, patios, exterior steps, basements and more.  If building a new home, there is potentially a ton of concrete work that needs to be done and it’s probably best to hire a contractor who uses a concrete professional (especially for pouring foundations).

Gutter installation and repair is one of those unglamorous jobs that can save you a ton of money in the long run. Damaged or clogged gutters can result in leaks and water damage.  Most homeowners can unclog their own gutters but it’s a nasty job.  Installing new gutters should be done by a pro.  Below are some typical gutter services you might need.

Many homeowners build their own outdoor structures or buy a kit and assemble it.  It’s actually a good way to go about things.  If something goes wrong it doesn’t impact any important aspect of your home. However, if you prefer to get a pro, you can hire local builders and landscape designers to do pretty much anything in your yard.  

Building a fence is a beastly job if it’s a large fence.  I believe I could manage it but it would take many weekends and probably wouldn’t turn out as good as what a pro could do.  I’d be on the fence about whether to pay a pro thousands or save that money myself.  Fence services include the following.

Most people who can use a hammer and saw can build a simple deck on flat ground.  Beyond that, it may require a pro (I’m talking multiple levels, built-in features, difficult terrain etc.).  Patios are trickier than they appear (if you want a flat patio).  Below are common deck and patio professional services you can hire locally.

We have a service that mows our lawn and does a big yard cleanup each year. It’s awesome. It’s one more thing I don’t have to worry about.  Most towns/cities have a lot of landscaping services to choose from so the cost isn’t that much.  The way I see it is I can dedicate one night a week to mowing the lawn or I can coach my kids’ teams. I prefer to coach and hang out with my kids than mow a lawn.

Apart from setting some simple ant traps, if you have a pest infestation, call in the pros and get it handled fast and thoroughly.  There’s no need to live with an infestation.

Like landscaping services, there are so many cleaning services these days that it’s a no-brainer if you have a few extra bucks.  We hire a cleaning service to come in every 3 weeks to clean the time-consuming parts of the home such as floors and bathrooms.  Getting that done by a crew of 3 in 1.5 hours is great.
